Granulites and Granulites 2018 - SW Norway Field trip: 14–18 July, 2018

PRELIMINARY PLANS – TO BE FINALISED

The post-conference fieldtrip will be to SW Norway and led by Trond Slagstad (NGU) and Chris Clark (Curtin). Attendees will be driven from Ullapool to Aberdeen (around 4 hours) to catch a flight to Stavanger. We will examine rocks regionally metamorphosed to granulite facies during the 1.2–0.9 Ga Sveconorwegian Orogeny, then again at around 0.9 Ga during emplacement of the Rogaland Igneous Complex, an enormous volume (~1000 km2) of anorthositic magma emplaced into already hot and dry (melt-depleted) crust.

We will see a variety of rocks types including the anorthosite, mafic (two pyroxene) granulites, and spectacular metapelitic rocks containing a wide variety of high temperature mineral assemblages that variably include sapphirine, orthopyroxene, garnet, cordierite, spinel and sillimanite. We will see spectacular exposures of fresh osumilite, an incredibly rare mineral found in its pristine state almost nowhere else on Earth.

Cost for students:         £xxx
Cost for non-students: £xxx

Note: Field trips can be paid for during registration page or subsequently.
