Galena, lead sulphide, is the primary ore of lead and has been worked since Babylonian times. The Romans used lead for weights, coins, vases and water-piping.
Galena most often originates from hot fluids and is deposited in mineral-rich veins, where it is commonly associated with sphalerite (zinc sulphide). It usually occurs as perfect cubic or octahedral crystals. Due to the orderly arrangement of lead and sulphur atoms in galena, the mineral has perfect cubic cleavage; when shattered it breaks into cubes. |
