Although it is best known as the primary ingredient of talcum powder, talc is a soft, fire-resistant mineral which has many industrial uses. It is used in making ceramic articles for the electrical industry, and as a filler for paint, rubber and insecticides.

Talc forms by alteration of magnesium-rich rocks and minerals at low temperatures and high pressure. Rocks consisting maily of talc are known as steatite or soapstone, and are soft enough to carve into ornaments.
