Structure of Council

The Society is governed by a board of trustees known as the Council. The Council is advised by the Finance/Officers Committee and the Publications Committee and occasionally by other ad hoc committees. Each of the Special Interest Groups (SIG) is run by a Committee and each SIG is represented on Council. The membership of the Council comprises the following:

Vacancies for ordinary members of Council are filled by nomination and, if necessary, election.

  • At the beginning of the year the forthcoming vacancies for the next calendar year are identified by the Executive Director

  • The vacancies are advertised in the April issue of Elements

  • The vacancies are reported at  the March Council meeting

  • In April the vacancies are advertised with nomination forms on the Society website

  • Nominations should be received at the Society Office by 1st June

  • At the June Council meeting if there are the same number of nominations as vacancies or less then Council will approve and elect the nominees

  • If there are more nominations than vacancies then Council will run a ballot of the members contacting them by 31 July at their last known address.

  • Votes shall be returned to the Office no later than 1 September

  • At the next meeting of the Officers Committee the Chairman of the meeting will appoint two officers to act as scrutineers to count the votes

  • A list of persons elected will then be posted on the website and forwarded to the November Council meeting
