Membership – who should join?

Membership is open to all who are interested in the Mineral Sciences, irrespective of location in the world. (The term ‘Mineral Sciences’ covers all of the areas covered by our eight special interest groups and beyond. Our journals include a wide range of subject matter also. And our conferences cover the entire spectrum of the subject.

The Society has spent many hours at Executive and Council level, working on ways to improve the EDI (equity, diversity and inclusivity) aspects of its membership. With this in mind, we have increased the number of free student memberships that we offer from 150 to 300 per year. The free membership period has been extended from 1 year to 3 years. Because we now offer:

  • remote attendance at all of our meetings/conferences as standard (and that this attendance is free for those living in low- and middle-income countries);
  • all of our journals are now fully online and accessible;
  • our grants/bursaries are available to all to apply for; and
  • we have changed how we handle our awards and the criteria we use, to invite applications/nominations from non-traditional sources

we feel that membership, more than ever, is open to all and we encourage you to join our community and benefit from it.

The Society particularly encourages students to join and offers free membership for three years* to all students. (*New in 2024, the first year includes a free subscription to the Membership magazine, Elements, years 2 and 3 do not.) Download a Membership application form here or join online here. All applications for membership are considered at one of the four annual meetings of Council. These are held in February, April July and  November.

Diversity

The Mineralogical Society is committed to diversity amongst its staff, leadership and membership. We operate under a climate where different ideas, abilities, backgrounds and needs are fostered with opportunities for members from divergent experiences to participate and contribute. Contributors from these diverse backgrounds are essential for good and representative decision-making. We therefore encourage participation in any Society activity by all of our members and others, regardless of race, sex, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, or disability and will undertake all reasonable efforts to ensure that our activities are open to all.
