He begins lecture 1 with “Chemical thermodynamics as applied in geology. We start by asking ourselves “why do reactions take place?” If I mix together a couple of chemicals and they react, why are they reacting? The obvious answer is: “because they’re unstable together and they react in order to make something that is more stable. How do we measure that tendency? How do I measure whether or not they will react? The way we can do this is to use a parameter called the chemical potential…..”
